Ages 6 -8

The North Star guiding our day is joy!

The Younger Spiral: Rooted in Connection, Community & Nature

In the Younger Spiral at School Around Us, learning begins with connection—to ourselves, each other, and the world around us. Community is at the heart of everything we do.

We share meals together, using that time to slow down, bond, and build a sense of belonging. Our days often begin and end in circle, creating space for reflection, intention, and shared experience. Throughout the year, we engage in identity projects that invite learners to explore who they are while learning about and appreciating the uniqueness of their peers.

Nature plays a central role in both our curriculum and daily life. Learners spend ample time playing and exploring outdoors, and we integrate the natural world into our learning whenever possible. We cherish our frequent adventures to “Crystal Falls,” a magical place in the woods near our school, where we pause to honor and give thanks to the land that supports our learning.

In the Younger Spiral, children grow through meaningful experiences, joyful play, and a deep sense of connection—to themselves, their community, and the earth.

Academics in the Younger Spiral: Personalized, Playful, and Purposeful

In the Younger Spiral at School Around Us, academic learning is thoughtfully adapted each year to meet the needs of the unique group of children we’re serving. Our approach to Math, Reading, and Writing is individualized, flexible, and grounded in real connection.

Math That Makes Sense

We use a mix of hands-on activities, games, and real-world problem-solving to bring math to life. Lessons are developmentally appropriate and designed to help each learner build a solid foundation while also having fun.

Reading & Writing That Inspire

Our literacy program nurtures a love for reading and writing through shared stories, phonics practice, creative projects, and a variety of media. Whether we’re reading aloud together or working on a themed writing project, we focus on joyful engagement and meaningful growth.

Family Partnership at the Core

What makes our academic approach truly special is the strong relationship between families and educators. As Ruby, our Younger Spiral teacher, shares:

“My favorite part about teaching academics is the relationship I create with each family to ensure their child is developing at a pace best for them. SAU truly is a place for caretakers and educators to collaborate and thrive.”

At SAU, we believe that when children, families, and teachers work together, learning becomes not just effective—but joyful.

The Power of Play in the Younger Spiral

In the Younger Spiral, play is a core value—a powerful tool for learning, emotional growth, and self-discovery. Whether through imaginative storytelling, cooperative games, or structured dramatic play woven into lessons, play is central to how young children explore the world and build essential life skills.

We honor unstructured, independent play as a vital part of development. During this time, learners are building the ability to manage their emotions, use their words to express feelings, and begin to understand more complex emotional experiences—both in themselves and in others.

Children at this age are beginning to see themselves as unique individuals with thoughts, preferences, and inner worlds. As they grow, we gently guide them toward becoming more mindful, kind, and self-aware—while also encouraging self-advocacy and a strong sense of self-worth.

Through play and connection, learners in the Younger Spiral grow not just academically, but as whole, thriving humans.
