Rhythm & Song of the African World with drummer Michael Wingfield

Multi-Day Workshop | 9:30am - 2:30pm | May 10 - 13th | Cost PAY WHAT YOU CAN AFFORD | No guardian necessary

This integrated 4-day workshop brings students on a cultural and historical journey with its roots in the African slave trade. Learners will discover the connections between Greek & African mythology by being exposed to the Orisha and Comparsa genres. They will explore these stories through music and rhythm as well as mime and storytelling. The musical concepts of timbre, tempo and rhythm will be learned through a variety of games played on conga drums, shekeres and bells. Guided by Michael, learners, in multi-age groups, will work together to comprise rhythmic pieces with a final performance for families on our last day. In addition, the African influenced art and cuisine of Brazil will be explored to round out this experience!

What to Bring? Appropriate clothing for outdoor play, water bottle, snacks, mask, lunch.

Samuel James Online Music Workshop

We are happy to invite you to join us for a workshop with guest artist Samuel James, live on zoom!

About the story.....

Tiny Bill, a little Black boy, doesn’t like being small. His grandfather, Grampy, takes Tiny Bill under his wing and teaches him – and the audience – about his musical heritage and that size isn’t everything, especially if you can make a big sound!

The Story of Tiny Bill McGraw is a story with music and song that Samuel James wrote, composed, performed, filmed and edited. He wrote it to share his artistry through a virtual form (since we can’t gather for performance) as well as to provide more history about and experience of African American music and song for young people.

Once you register, we will send you the links to the story - in three parts/10 minutes each - and a zoom link to join us for the live workshop on Thursday April 8th at 11am. A description of the workshop is below.

Portland Ovations hosts a workshop with musician, singer, and storyteller Samuel James as he shares a behind-the-scenes glimpse of his Story of Tiny Bill McGraw. Samuel will share more information on the performance, play some music, and answer questions from students. You can expect many guitars, some harmonica jams, and a peek into musical history. It is best if students have viewed the performance ahead of time.
