The Arts are an essential part of our curriculum.

As an important manner of self-expression, various forms of visual and performance art are often integrated within any study at School Around Us.

Music

All spirals have regular music class each week. Our music teacher, Sharon, focuses on singing traditional and modern songs, introducing music history, playing instruments and learning to keep rhythm. She also incorporates student interest where she can! We also currently have two concert performances per year. Listen below to hear some of what our learners are doing in music class!

The Visual Arts

While the arts are often integrated into classes, there are times where we focus on them solely through a theme class. In January 2023, we began a whole school Drawing and Art History theme. Learners practiced shape, line and shading in drawing class and learned about several groundbreaking artists in Art History class; then made art inspired by their style.

Self-portraits are also a common practice within Holistic Education. You will see them take many forms, in various media, but they always serve the purpose as a tool for looking at the self and developing self-identity.

Theater

An All school play is a longstanding School Around Us tradition. This is an immersive experience where students audition for parts, memorize lines and work to build characters through extensive rehearsals. We work on character building, improv skills and working as a team to pull off a polished production! The Educators present three plays to the learners and a learner committee is chosen to take the feedback from each spiral and make a final decision on the play we do together. This is a 7 week theater intensive that involves all aspects of production. EVERYONE is involved. Our goal is to get each learner on stage in at least a small part. There are often opportunities to be involved in set building, painting, costume and lighting design and music. Our theater program is an important part of what we do at SAU. It encompasses all aspects of the 8 domains of learning and builds incredible confidence within our learners.
